Ford Adds F-600 to Super Duty Chassis Cab Lineup

With Ford’s class-exclusive choice of gasoline or diesel powertrains and 4x2 or 4x4 drivetrains, F-600 lets fleets spec the truck they want instead of settling for one that’s available.

Ford will begin selling the F-600 Super Duty chassis cab that delivers the capability of a Class 6 truck with a maximum gross vehicle weight rating of 22,000 pounds in a Class 5 Super Duty package, Ford announced at The Work Truck Show.

The 2020 F-600 fills a slot between the F-550 and F-650 in terms of size and capability. Vocations that will most benefit from the new truck include utility, towing, construction, and oil and gas service. The overall vehicle is the same size as an F-550, but the F-600 uses an upgraded driveline and chassis components, as well as higher-weight-rated 19.5-inch tires and wheels to help it achieve a a higher GVWR.

"We designed F-600 for the toughest jobs — the vocations that work their trucks the hardest and demand the most from them," said Kevin Koester, Ford's medium-duty truck and Super Duty fleet marketing manager.

The F-600 will be powered by a powertrain designed and built by Ford that includes a new 7.3L V-8 gasoline engine and 10-speed TorqShift transmission. The new engine will also be offered with Ford's Super Duty pickups. The F-600 will also offer the third-generation 6.7L Power Stroke diesel V-8 already available in the Super Duty lineup.

“Core customers for F-600 can be divided into two groups: Fleets that currently run Class 5 trucks but may overload them past their rated max GVWR of 19,500 pounds, and customers who traditionally over-spec their trucks to make sure they don’t run into issues with payload or equipment-carrying capacity," said Koester. "Both fleet types will love this truck because it’s exactly what they need — not just what’s available."

The new truck incorporates feedback from commercial users, Koester said.

"At Ford, we pride ourselves on really listening to customer feedback and turning customer pain points into new product strengths," he said. "With F-600, we’ve taken the proven F-550 Super Duty and given it an additional 2,500 pounds of GVWR, translating into more payload capacity and easier decision-making for an operator when loading up for a job. No need to compromise on what to bring or to pay for more truck than you need."

The entire 2020 Super Duty lineup offers rear- or all-wheel drivetrains. Orders for the F-600 will open in early 2020, and the trucks will ship by the summer.
