The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will propose a rule that would make reformulated gasoline (RFG) mixed with ethanol subject to a less stringent emission performance standard. The proposal would ease the requirement that RFG reduce summertime emissions of volatile organic compounds. The less stringent standards would apply only to RFG mixed with ethanol and not to RFG mixed with methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE). The agency said it believes the proposal could reduce refiner reliance on MTBE by making it easier to meet environmental performance standards for RFG while using ethanol.
