German-American automaker DaimlerChrysler AG has announced it will bring fuel-cell vehicles to the market within two years. Speaking at a news conference in Hanover, DaimlerChrysler Chief Executive Juergen Schrempp said that public transportation buses would be equipped with fuel cells in just two years time. Two years later, the first passenger cars would be fitted with fuel cells, Schrempp said. He gave no details about where these vehicles will be launched. “In just two more years, DaimlerChrysler will be the first worldwide automaker to bring fuel-cell vehicles to the market,” the group said in a statement. DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motor Co., Honda Motor Co., Nissan Motor Co., and Volkswagen are all members of a fuel-cell alliance called the “California Fuel Cell Partnership.” The alliance aims to keep abreast of the global trend of environment-friendly cars, and has been trying since April 1999 to set the standards for fuel-cell driven vehicles. Prototypes of hydrogen, gasoline, and methanol-driven fuel cells are currently being developed.
