Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups will adopt new trailer weight ratings for the 2015 model year that are based on SAE J2807 recommended practices.
The versions of the trucks equipped with the 6.2L V-8 and Max Trailering Package will maintain the top rating of 12,000 lbs., while most of the other configurations will decrease between 300 and 500 pounds.
"The base V-6 regular cab two-wheel-drive versions saw a 300-pound decrease to 6,100 lbs. The V-6 regular cab trucks with four-wheel drive keep the same rating of 7,600 lbs.", reports The Car Connection.
With the announcement, GM is the first of the Detroit automakers to release revised tow ratings after all three agreed to adopt the SAE standard for the 2015 model year.
"We engineered the new Silverado and Sierra 1500s to be our most capable light-duty pickups ever," said Jeff Luke, executive chief engineer for GM. "For 2015, we will build on that strong foundation to implement SAE J2807 while maintaining robust towing capability across the lineup."
