Kansas Fuel Tax to Increase

Kansas will increase the surcharge levied against trucks driving on its highways, according to the State Laws Newsletter. On July 1, Kansas will raise the rate of diesel tax from 23 to 25 cents per gallon and its gasoline from 21 to 23 cents.

Missouri voters will decide in August whether to raise the state's fuel taxes by 4 cents a gallon. The legislation, passed in a last-minute rush on the last day of the session, would raise an estimated $431 million for state highways, roads, bridges, and public transportation.

National Gasoline Price Increases

Higher prices in the West and a temporary slowdown in production pushed the average nationwide price of gasoline up .7 cents to $1.44 per gallon in the past two weeks, according to the Lundberg Survey released June 23. Prices dipped in most regions of the country, analyst Trilby Lundberg said, but larger hikes in some western states offset falling national prices.

Diesel Prices Continue to Fall

The average price of diesel fuel fell more than a penny per gallon last week, continuing a general pattern of falling prices since early April. Figures released on June 17 by the U.S. Department of Energy show the national retail average of a gallon of diesel price was $1.275, down from $1.286 the previous week.

BP announced June 14 that its cleaner-burning, ultra-low sulfur ECD-1 diesel fuel will now be sold at all of its California ARCO and AM/PM retail outlets, where diesel is sold. BP has begun to invest in new retail sites as the company expands its presence in the region with fueling and convenience outlets.

American Petroleum Institute Issues Statistical Report for May 2002

Demand was down 4.3 percent in May 2002 from the same period last year, according to the American Petroleum Institute (API). In the same period, gasoline demand, as measured by how much product was delivered by refineries and bulk terminals, fell 1.8 percent from May 2001.
