Volvo Cars will offer a plug-in hybrid electric version of every model, and will introduce several mild hybrids with gasoline or diesel engines in the next few months, the company has announced. The mild hybrids won't be initially offered in the U.S.
Volvo upgraded its T8 and T6 Twin Engine PHEVs that are now available in its cars and crossovers. Volvo is planning to make 25% of its production plug-in hybrid vehicles.
The upgraded T8 powertrain can make up to 420 horsepower, and increases the effective range by about 15%, while the updated T6 also increases range by 15%. The new T6 is available with the V60 and S60.
The first mild hybrids will be available with the XC90 midsize SUV and XC60 compact SUV. They will be paired with Volvo's new regenerative braking system. Volvo will include a "B" as part of its badging on the exterior of the vehicle.
Customers who purchase the XC60 can choose between a B5 mild hybrid gasoline or diesel engine; B4 diesel mild hybrid; or B6 gasoline mild hybrid.
Volvo's XC40 will receive a new electrified option that will be a T5 Twin Engine gasoline PHEV. Volvo will add a second T4 Twin Engine PHEV at a later date.
