Walmart has begun testing self-driving Ford vehicles as part of a third-party delivery experiment with Postmates to deliver tacos, floral arrangements, dry cleaning and other items, Ford has announced.
Ford has been running an autonomous vehicle testing program in Miami-Dade County.
"Through this collaboration, we are exploring how self-driving vehicles can deliver many everyday goods such as groceries, diapers, pet food and personal care items," said Brian Wolf, director of business development with Ford Autonomous Vehicles. "Enabled by Postmates delivery as a service, we were able to quickly set up a pilot program that explores how our self-driving vehicles can complement Walmart’s existing delivery offerings."
Walmart and Ford will use several research vehicles and gather data about customer preferences over the next several months.
Ford vehicles have already made more than 1,000 deliveries as part of its autonomous vehicle delivery testing.
"We're confident that working with Walmart will strengthen our effort to successfully deploy self-driving vehicles in a way that people actually want to experience — whether they're ordering takeout, groceries or anything else they might need," Wolf said.
