Subaru has begun producing its 2019 Ascent three-row SUV at its Indiana assembly plant that was expanded to accommodate the new vehicle, the company announced.
The midsize SUV will be the fourth Subaru vehicle produced at Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. in Lafayette, along with the Outback, Legacy, and Impreza. Subaru invested $140 million and added about 200 jobs to the plant for the Ascent.
Subaru has invested nearly $1.5 billion in the past in the past five years, and has also begun building the fifth-generation 2017 Impreza.
The Indiana plant should produce about 400,000 vehicles per year and help Subaru further expand overall sales, which reached nearly 650,000 vehicles in 2017. The plant has built more than 5 million vehicles since opening in September of 1989.
The 2019 Ascent will go on sale in the middle of this year as the largest vehicle in the Subaru lineup.
