Goodyear’s Cooper Acquisition Expands Tire Manufacturing Capacity to 97K Units

The $2.5 billion acquisition of Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. by Goodyear Tire will expand the tiremaker’s U.S. manufacturing footprint to three additional plants and will ultimately add 97,000 units of passenger and light truck tire manufacturing capacity for the company.

Cooper operates plants in Findlay, Ohio; Tupelo, Miss.; and Texarkana, Ark. The plants in Ohio and Arkansas produce both passenger and light truck tires. Cooper’s plant in Mississippi only manufactures passenger tires. 

Of Goodyear’s five U.S.-based plants, two produce commercial tires in Danville, Va., and Topeka, Kan. It has two other plants that manufacture consumer tires and one that makes racing tires.

Cooper’s three U.S. consumer tire plants, together, have the capacity to produce 97,000 units per day, according to Modern Tire Dealer. Goodyear’s two U.S. consumer tire plants have a combined capacity of 106,000 units.

Goodyear also has a consumer tire manufacturing plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The plant opened in 2017.
