Hyundai's first foray into the subcompact SUV segment presents a strong competitor in an increasingly crowded market for crossover buyers. Read our driving impressions here. Photos by Kelly Bracken.

The 2018 Kona comes in four trims: SE; SEL; Limited; and Ultimate. The SE and SEL trims feature four-cylinder 2.0-liter engines while the Limited and Ultimate trims feature four-cylinder 1.6-liter engines.

EPA fuel efficiency estimates for the SE and SEL trims are 27 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined without AWD and 25/30/27 with AWD. For the Limited and Ultimate trims, the estimates are 28 city, 32 highway, and 30 combined without AWD, and 26/29/27 with AWD.

With the rear seats folded down, the 2018 Hyundai Kona offers 45.8 cubic feet of cargo space. With the rear seats up, available cargo space totals 19.2 cubic feet.

The SE and SEL engines make 147 hp and 132 lb.-feet of torque. The Limited and Ultimate engines make 175 hp and 195 lb-ft. of torque.

An all-wheel-drive powertrain can be added to any trim level for an additional $1,300.

The interior of the Kona comes in leather at the Limited and Ultimate trim levels. Some of the features included in the Ultimate trim are a heads up display, a wireless charging station, automated temperature control, and a larger infotainment system.
