Clean Fleet Industry Gathers for 2024 ACT Expo

The 2024 ACT (Alternative Clean Transportation) Expo convened May 20-23 at the Las Vegas Convention Center with over 2,100 fleet and mobility professionals representing all sectors of the fleet industry including corporate, government, law enforcement, education, and utility. 

The exhibits and educational sessions explored the latest technologies around low- and zero-emission transportation, including electric, hydrogen, natural gas, and renewable power, along with the sustainability trends and regulations driving the transition.

The 2024 ACT Expo gathered over 12,000 attendees and featured over 230 exhibits in the West Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Shelley Simpson, president of J.B. Hunt Transport Services, made the point that the industry has many pathways to decarbonize that are not as capital-intensive as electric vehicles.

Fleet electrification increasingly depends on mobile charging systems while waiting for permanent infrastructure. This charging system from Volt Vault uses renewable natural gas to generate off-grid electric for Level 2 or Level 3 charging up to 175kW.

 Motiv Electric Trucks unveiled Argo, the company’s first fully-integrated cab-chassis design built by Motiv and not sourced from other OEMs. Argo supports a wide range of truck body lengths and types, from short dump trucks and aerial lifts to walk-through delivery trucks, dry freight, refrigerated trucks, and buses.

Yes, the market of startup commercial EV makers is still growing. China-based U Power displayed its entry-level Class 1 delivery van based on a “plug-and-play” chassis, though not ready for the U.S.

Ryder System CEO Robert Sanchez shared results of a Ryder study that analyzed Total Cost to Transport (TCT) for commercial EVs versus traditional ICE vehicles. Class 2b cargo vans came the closest to parity.

New to the U.S., electric truck maker ZM Trucks revealed five models in the Class 4, 5, 6, and “baby 8” segments. ZM expects the trucks to be on sale in the U.S. by the end of 2024.

Executives from IKEA, DHL Supply Chain, Sysco, Maersk, and PepsiCo discuss decarbonization efforts. IKEA has reduced GHG emissions by 28% since 2017. PepsiCo aims to reduce Scope 1& 2 emissions by 75% by 2030.
