The Chevrolet Colorado mid-size pickup will offer a more efficient V-6 engine and transmission for the 2017 model year, Chevrolet has announced.
The 2017 Colorado's V-6 keeps its 3.6L displacement, and improves operating efficiency with a slight bump in power. The new engine produces 308 hp and 275 lb.-ft. of torque compared to the 305 hp and 269 lb.-ft. for the outgoing model.
The new V-6 adds improved variable valve timing for intake and exhaust, improved direct injection and Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) that disables two cylinders under light throttle applications.
Chevrolet is pairing the engine with an 8-speed Hydra-Matic 8L45 automatic transmission, which replaces the outgoing 6L80 6-speed automatic.
The 8-speed automatic offers a wider 7.0 overall gear ratio spread than the 6L80 transmission's 6.0 ratio. The numerically higher first gear ratio helps drivers start off more confidently with a heavy load or when trailering. Numerically lower rear axle ratios reduce engine rpm on the highway for improved efficiency, according to GM.
The 2017 Colorado will arrive at dealerships in the fourth quarter.
