Hyundai's 2020 Accent will arrive with an updated powertrain that's expected to significantly improve the EPA-rated fuel economy of the subcompact car, according to the automaker.

The more-efficient Smartstream G1.6 dual port injection inline-four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable transmission (Intelligent Variable Transmission) replace the outgoing GDI DOHC 1.6-liter engine and six-speed automatic transmission. The new 1.6-liter engine lowers horsepower by 10 hp (to 120 hp) and torque by 6 pound-feet (to 113 lb.-ft.).

The trade-off for better fuel economy is significant, as the Accent gains 4 miles per gallon in the city and in combined driving. It gains 3 mpg on the highway. The 2020 Accent is rated at 33 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, and 36 mpg combined.

Hyundai will offer its 2020 Accent in three trims, including SE, SEL, and Limited. Buyers can choose a six-speed manual transmission model as the entry model that retails for at least $15,195, plus a $930 delivery charge. The vehicle goes on sale later this summer.
