The NAFA Fleet Management Association has adopted a policy prohibiting the use of any electronic device while driving by its employees, contractors, and volunteers, the fleet management association has announced.

The policy comes ahead of the start of Drive Safety Work Week, an awareness campaign from Oct. 5-9 by the Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS). NAFA is extending an internal policy that's been in place for about two years to contractors and partners.

"There cannot be any ambivalence about our position, no hypocrisy, no loopholes," said Phillip E. Russo, NAFA's CEO. "We are the association for fleet professionals, and so the example has to begin with us."

The policy prohibits handheld as well as hands-free use of electronic devices.

Cell-phone use while driving quadruples the risk of a crash, according to the National Safety Council. In 2010, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) banned commercial truck and bus drivers from texting while driving and in 2011 banned hand-held cell phone use by commercial drivers.
