Mike Sims, fleet operations manager for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) and Automotive Fleet's 2010 Professional Fleet Manager of the Year, recently donated a $5,000 scholarship check to the LDS Business College (LDSBC).

The scholarship was provided by the Automotive Fleet & Leasing Association (AFLA), which co-sponsors the annual Automotive Fleet award with Wheels Inc. As part of its co-sponsorship, AFLA provides to Fleet Manager of the Year Award winners a $5,000 scholarship to bestow upon the business school of their choice.

Based in Salt Lake City, LDSBC is a two-year college focused on training students in business and industry. One reason Sims said he selected LDSBC as the recipient of the scholarship check was because more than half of the students enrolled are first-generation college students.

"It was also reported to me that the college does not get as many donations as some of our other Church schools and that the money would help about 10 students," said Sims. "[LDSBC] President Richards spent about an hour with me as I presented the check to him and he was most grateful."

Dallan Sohm, director of Fleet and Food Services for the LDS Church, who was also present when Sims donated the check, said he has worked with the LDS Business College in different capacities.

"This is an excellent institution with a focus on training marketable business skills to those who do not qualify for university education," said Sohm. "Many of the students come from foreign lands. The money donated will be carefully scrutinized to provide education to those who need it the most. The donation is an investment in young people that will make a difference to the global society."

Sims was selected out of 26 nominees for the 2010 Professional Fleet Manager of the Year. The announcement was made during a special awards presentation in April at the NAFA Institute & Expo in Detroit.
