Honda's 2018 Clarity Plug-in Hybrid sedan can achieve 47 electrified miles before running in gasoline mode and provides an overall range of 340 miles, the Environmental Protection Agency has determined.

The sedan will have the highest electrified range among midsize plug-in hybrid sedans, a small segment that also includes the Ford Fusion Energi Plug-in Hybrid, Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid and Kia Optima Plug-in Hybrid.

While the 2018 Clarity Plug-in Hybrid achieved a higher rating for electrified miles, the others provide higher overall range. The Fusion Energi provides 22 electric miles, while the Kia provides 29 miles and the Hyundai provides 27 miles. The plug-in hybrid sedans provide an overall range of 610 miles (Fusion Energi), 590 (Optima), and 610 miles (Sonata). Chevrolet's Volt plug-in hybrid compact sedan provides 53 electric miles and 430 miles of overall range.

The 2018 Clarity Plug-in Hybrid pairs a 181-horsepower electric motor with a 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine. The electric motor makes 232 lb.-ft. of torque and draws power from the gasoline engine and a 17-kilowatt hour batter pack that can be recharged in 2.5 hours at 240 volts (Level 2).

Honda will offer its plug-in hybrid sedan in base and Touring trim grades. Honda hasn't announced pricing or an on-sale date.
