WASHINGTON — Mazda Motor Corp. is recalling 52,390 2001-2002 model-year Tribute SUVs because potential brake fluid leaks pose a fire risk.

The vehicles covered by the recall were all manufactured from April 20, 2000 through July 19, 2002.

In these vehicles, the brake master cylinder reservoir cap may leak brake fluid. If this occurs, the fluid might come in contact with the antilock brake system (ABS) module wiring harness connector. As a result, corrosion may develop in the electrical connector. This can lead to smoking, melting or even a fire.

Mazda will notify vehicle owners of the recall, and dealers will replace the reservoir cap and modify the ABS electrical system free of charge.

Mazda advised that until these repairs are made, vehicles covered by the recall should be parked outside.

Earlier this month, Ford Motor Co. recalled 244,530 Escape SUVs made during the same model years because of the same issue.
