COLOGNE, GERMANY – Ford is putting its new 1.0L three-cylinder EcoBoost engine into the European version of the Ford Focus, according to a news release from the automaker.

Ford said it plans to bring this new engine, the smallest EcoBoost engine developed by the automaker so far, to the U.S. at some point but hasn’t yet announced a timeline or specific models that will receive the engine.

The company plans to use this new engine first in the Focus, then the C-MAX and then its all-new Ford B-MAX in Europe, and the new engine will make its debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show in the Focus.

Ford said it developed the engine at its Dunton Technical Centre in the U.K. The new direct-injected engine features a compact turbocharger design and will use Ti-VCT twin variable camshaft timing for improved performance. Ford said it also employed a new camshaft actuator to speed up response times.

A “split cooling” system reduces fuel consumption by warming the engine block more quickly, according to Ford. This new EcoBoost engine uses cast iron for the engine block rather than aluminum, which Ford said means it requires half of the amount of energy required with engines that use aluminum for the engine block.

The exhaust manifold is cast into the cylinder head, which lowers exhaust gas temperatures. These lower temperatures enable the engine to run with an optimum fuel-to-air ratio across a wider rev band.

Other changes include a design that immerses the two main engine drive belts in oil for quieter, more efficient running, and an “unbalanced” flywheel and pulley, which offsets the engine configuration. Ford said these changes, along with optimized engine mounts, will deliver a “refined performance feel.”
