Evolution of the Ford Explorer

The second generation of the Explorer added driver and passenger airbags. In 1996, the Explorer also upgraded to a 5.0-liter V-8 engine.

In 2006, the Explorer updated the interior, redesigned the rear suspension and added power-folding third-row seats.

The 1991 Explorer featured a 4.0-liter V-6 engine and got 15 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway.

The third generation got a major facelift. The Explorer had an optional third seat, offered four different trim levels and drivers could choose from a 4.0-liter V-6 or 4.6-liter V-8 engine.

The current generation of the Explorer moved from a a body-on-frame chassis to the D4 unibody platform. It gets 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.
