Ford has begun production of its 2015 Edge mid-size SUV and will hire 400 additional workers at the plant near Toronto where it will be built.

Ford has set global aspirations for the redesigned vehicle, which is entering its second generation, and plans to sell it in more than 100 markets around the globe, including Western Europe for the first time. Ford hired an additional 1,000 employees announced in 2014 at the plant.

The Edge will initially go on sale in the spring in the U.S. and Canada with several updates. It becomes the first Ford vehicle to get a standard EcoBoost engine. Ford has added a new body structure and redesigned the suspension. Ford has also added its new adaptive steering technology that makes the vehicle easier to maneuver. The vehicle will offer optional auto stop-start and self-parking technologies.

The 2015 Edge offers three engines, including two new power plants — a 2.0L EcoBoost four-cylinder and a 2.7L EcoBoost V-6. Ford will also carry over the existing 3.5L V-6 engine.
