Hyundai revealed a compact truck concept vehicle designed for urban settings that includes an extendable bed that would give the truck a similar size to a mid-size pickup at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The Santa Cruz Crossover Truck Concept, which has been designed in the U.S., is designed to provide greater maneuverability in city driving and parking, as well as greater utility for hauling payload.
The vehicle features an upright, hexagonal grille with cascading lines framing the sides, dual lens-free, honeycombed headlamp projectors, and prominent LED fog lamps. The truck also is being shown with oversized wheels, Michelin tires with a special tread design, center-locking hubs and yellow Brembo brake calipers, according to Hyundai.
The truck's most notable feature is an expandable bed that can be reconfigured for longer cargo using a drawer-like sliding function.
The truck is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo diesel that provides 190 hp and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. With this powertrain, it can achieve "fuel economy in the high 30 mpg range," according to a Hyundai release.
