Toyota Motor Corp. has sold more than 7 million gasoline-electric hybrids globally so far in 2014, reaching the milestone faster than it has in any other previous year, according to the automaker.

The automaker's success at selling hybrids rests on its Prius, which accounts for nearly half of the total number, or 3.36 million. Other Prius variants including the Prius A, Prius V, and Prius + account for 498,000 units, and the Aqua and Prius C account for 853,800 units.

In North America, the Prius has sold 1.5 million units, followed by the Camry Hybrid, which has sold 329,200 units, according to Toyota. The Prius is also the top-selling hybrid for Toyota in Japan and Europe. In Japan, the Prius variants follow. In Europe, the Auris Hybrid is the second highest selling hybrid.

Toyota's hybrid vehicles have made their mark among fleets. Commercial fleets registered 3,617 Prius compact cars and 782 Prius V cars during the 2013 calendar year. During the 2012 calendar year, commercial fleets added 1,529 Camry Hybrid cars. Those fleets added 8,229 Camry and Camry Hybrid cars in 2013.

Toyota offers 20 Toyota and Lexus hybrids in the North American market, according to the automaker.
