United Parcel Service will invest $70 million to purchase 1,000 propane autogas delivery trucks and install 50 fueling stations at UPS sites to support them, the company announced today.
The initiative stems from a partnership with the Propane Education and Research Council (PERC), which worked with UPS and equipment manufacturers to develop the vehicles and secure certification from the EPA and California Air Resources Board.
UPS partnered with Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp., which provided the chassis that's powered by a General Motors engine supplied by Powertrain Integration. The truck uses CleanFuel USA's propane autogas fuel system.
The new vehicles will replace gasoline and diesel-fueled vehicles used in rural areas of Louisiana and Oklahoma. The vehicles can traveil up to 200 miles on a single tank of propane autogas. UPS will begin rolling out the vehicles by the middle of 2014.
UPS currently operates nearly 900 propane autogas vehicles in Canada.
