Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has unveiled an ambitious growth plan that calls for the doubling in global Jeep production by 2018 and the expansion of the Fiat brand in Asia and Latin America.

As the plan's centerpiece, FCA plans to increase sales of Jeep models to 1.9 million globally in 2018 from 798,000 in 2013 by building assembly plants in Italy, Brazil, China, and India.

During a news conference, Sergio Marchionne, FCA's chief executive and chairman, said he feels confident the restructured company can execute the plan.

"If 80% of this plan gets delivered you're already miles ahead of where you are without it," Marchionne said. "There is capacity to produce everything I showed you."

As the centerpiece of the plan, the Jeep brand gets the most ambitious roll-out plan with four new models scheduled for 2016, 2017, and 2018. The Patriot and Compass compact SUVs will be phased out in 2016. FCA introduces the Renegade compact SUV this year it plans to offer around the globe; it arrives in the U.S. later this year. An additional compact SUV will be introduced in 2016.

In 2017, FCA will introduce a new Wrangler, a year after a mid-cycle refresh of the Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee gets a refresh in 2015 and a redesign in 2017. A three-row Grand Wagoneer arrives in 2018 as the largest Jeep SUV.

The wide-ranging plan calls for changes to Chrysler's vehicle mix that include phasing out existing models such as the Dodge Grand Caravan and Avenger, and introducing more fuel efficient vehicles, including the first compact car and a pair of plug-in electric vehicles under the Chrysler nameplate.

FCA confirmed it will produce the Chrysler 100 compact car for the 2016 model year and introduce a refreshed 300 full-size sedan later this year with an all-new 300 scheduled for 2018.

Two new Chrysler SUVs will arrive — a mid-size SUV in 2018 and a full-size SUV to compete with the Ford Explorer in 2017 that will also be available as a plug-in electric vehicle. An all-new Town and Country minivan will arrive in 2016, also with a plug-in hybrid version.

FCA is positioning Fiat for growth outside the U.S. market with plans to introduce eight new or redesigned models in Latin America and 10 in Asia and Australia between this year and 2018.
