The BMW i3 electric car, first introduced for the 2014 model year, is an innovative step forward in EV technology with its carbon fiber, plastic and aluminum structure. It provides an EPA-rated range of 81 miles in normal driving mode on a full charge. BMW also offers a range-extending model. Photos by Vince Taroc.

General Motors introduced its 2014-MY Cadillac ELR, an extended-range electric vehicle (similar to the Volt) slated to go on sale in early 2014. The vehicle features a 1.4L gasoline generator and electric motors for propulsion, and GM said the Cadillac ELR has an all-electric range of 35 miles.
