The New York Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) has approved the Nissan NV200 as the official “Taxi of Tomorrow” for the City, according to Nissan. Originally selected as the official “Taxi of Tomorrow” in May of 2011, New York’s comptroller refused to approve the contract until Nissan made the vehicle wheelchair accessible back in May of this year. The new approved regulations require the replacement of retiring taxi cabs with this new vehicle.

In order to meet this requirement, Nissan has partnered with Braun Corp. to develop a solution to make these vehicles wheelchair-accessible. The automaker said it will offer a wheelchair-accessible version of this vehicle when they go on sale in 2013 to taxi medallion holders.

Nissan added it is currently in the process of performing crash tests, with taxi equipment installed, on the vehicle. The automaker said the “Taxi of Tomorrow” will hit the streets of New York in October of 2013. Total MSRP for the vehicle, with all planned standard features, will be approximately $29,700, according to Nissan.
