In the USA, a tax assessed by some states either on a lump-sum basis for a purchased vehicle or on a periodic basis on rental payments in the case of a leased vehicle. In general, use taxes and sales taxes in any given state are identical, and either one or the other is assessed (but not both), depending on a particular state's legal code and other technical considerations.
