The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is an independent, nonprofit, scientific, and educational organization that dedicates its efforts to reducing the losses, deaths, injuries, and property damage, from crashes on U.S. highways. The organization performs crash test evaluations on vehicles and releases this evaluation information.
The IIHS rates vehicle crashworthiness with the following descriptive terms: good, acceptable, marginal, or poor. The organization bases these ratings on vehicle performance in high-speed front and side crash tests, a rollover test, plus evaluations of seat/head restraints for protection against neck injuries in rear impacts. The IIHS also offers a higher safety distinction, the Top Safety Pick award. To achieve this distinction, a vehicle must have good ratings in all four Institute tests. In addition, the winning vehicles must offer electronic stability control.
