The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has awarded five-star safety ratings to new vehicles from Citroen, Peugeot, Toyota, and Mitsubishi.

The 2014 Citroen C4 Grand Picasso people mover, Toyota Highlander large SUV, 2013 Peugeot 2008 compact SUV, and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (plug-in hybrid vehicle) have earned the safety rating, reports Scoop Media.

The four vehicles offer electronic stability control, anti-lock braking, and electronic brake distribution as standard features. None of the vehicles offer autonomous emergency braking.

"We're making good progress in reducing deaths and serious injuries on New Zealand roads, but we need to keep improving the safety of all parts of our transport system to save more lives and prevent more serious injuries," said Celia Patrick, the New Zealand Transport Agency's group manager of access and use.
