MONTVALE, NJ – Merceces-Benz is introducing a refreshed version of its entry-level GLK-Class SUV for the 2013 model-year. The vehicle comes in three models, the gasoline-fueled GLK350, the GLK350 4MATIC, and the diesel-fueled GLK250 BlueTEC 4MATIC.

Beyond new powertrain technology, other features new for the 2013 model-year include a new exterior design that Mercedes said “combines classic SUV styling with the design language of the current Mercedes-Benz sedans,” plus changes to the vehicle’s interior and infotainment system.

The gasoline engine-equipped models will be available during summer 2012 while the diesel version will arrive in early 2013, according to Mercedes.

Performance

The 2013-MY GLK350 and GLK350 4MATIC are powered by a 3.5L direct-injection gasoline V-6 that’s capable of producing 302 hp and 273 lb.-ft. of torque between 3,500 to 5,250 rpm.

The GLK 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC comes with a 2.1L diesel inline four-cylinder diesel engine, capable of producing 190hp and 369 lb.-ft. of torque. The automaker hasn’t yet released fuel-economy figures for the different models. ECO Start/Stop functionality is now standard on the GLK models, and the diesel GLK240 BlueTEC 4MATIC comes with a new emissions control system.

Exterior

Mercedes characterized the GLK’s new look as “even more athletic,” and that it combines off-road elements with the current design aesthetic of Mercedes-Benz sedans. The exterior paint choices for the new GLK include 12 metallic and non-metallic paints.

Up front, the standard automatic headlamps on the vehicle offer LED daytime running lights and locator lighting. The automaker said the optional Lighting Package comes with bi-xenon headlamps with active curve illumination, Active Highbeam Assist, and a headlamp cleaning system.

Additional exterior changes include a new chrome skidplate, chrome-plated tailpipe trim, redesigned tail lights (both their look and functionality), and new 5-triple-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels with 235/50 R 19 all-season tires as standard equipment. The Appearance package offers 20-inch 5-twin-spoke wheels. Brushed aluminum running boards with rubber studs and a power panorama sunroof are standalone options.

Inside, the new GLK, Mercedes added a large trim piece in burl walnut that spans the width of the interior. The interior also features new round air vents and trim elements in Silver Shadow. Standard equipment also includes a premium leather multifunction steering wheel with shift paddles and a premium 4.5-inch color display in the instrument cluster.

In terms of upholstery options, Mercedes is offering new upholstery colors and seat designs in a range of MB-Tex and leather. Standard MB-Tex upholstery choices include Black, Almond/Beige and Grey, and available genuine leather choices include Black, Mocha, and Almond.

The Full Leather Seating package includes interior ambient lighting featuring LED fiber-optic technology. In addition to full leather seating (including door panels in MB-Tex), the package also incorporates front passenger seat memory and comfort headrests. The automaker offers heated front seats as a standalone option.

New for the 2013MY, the Direct Select shifter for the seven-speed automatic transmission is ergonomically located on the steering column, which the automaker said frees up space in the center console for cup holders.

Infotainment

When it comes to infotainment equipment, the new GLK includes a six-speaker sound system with an AM/FM radio, single CD player and MP3 playback capability, a Bluetooth interface for hands-free calling, and a central controller with a 5.8-inch color display.

The optional Multimedia package adds a 7-inch display with a rear-view camera, enhanced voice control, and the COMAND system with hard-drive navigation. SIRIUSXM satellite radio and an iPod/MP3 media interface are included in the Premium package or are available individually as standalone options. The vehicle also offers an optional high-end Harman Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system.

Safety

Standard equipment in the 2013MY GLK includes the ATTENTION ASSIST drowsy driver detection system, three additional airbags for a total of nine, and NECK-PRO active front head restraints. Child safety features include rear door child safety locks, the universal LATCH system on the second row outboard seats, and Top Tether anchors for child seats (second-row seats).

Additional standard equipment includes seat occupancy recognition for the front passenger seat; crash-responsive pedals; three head restraints in the rear that are adjustable for height and tilt; three-point seat belts that come with a mechanical belt height adjustment feature, a belt force limiter for the driver and front passenger, plus automatic belt height adjustment on the outer rear seats.

Active safety systems include ADAPTIVE BRAKE, including Hill-Start Assist, HOLD function, brake drying in the wet and priming; AGILITY CONTROL suspension with a selective damping system; ABS; Acceleration Skid Control (ASR); Brake Assist (BAS) (assisting the driver with additional brake power when emergency braking is detected); a direct-steer system with speed-sensitive power assistance and variable steering ratio; an Electronic Stability Program, including trailer stabilization; 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive with 4ETS electronic traction system; and a tire pressure monitoring system.

The available Lane Tracking package features Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist, while the Driver Assistance package offers DISTRONIC PLUS with PRE-SAFE Brake, Brake Assist Plus, Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist. Mercedes offers PARKTRONIC with Active Parking Assist as a standalone option, which helps the driver automatically maneuver in and out of parking spaces. KEYLESS-GO is also included.

Additional Features

Other features in the new GLK models include 8-way power adjustable front seats with height and backrest adjustment, armrests for driver and front passenger with a storage compartment beneath, front and rear cup holders, dual-zone automatic climate control with dust filter, 12 V sockets in the center console and luggage compartment, power windows with express up and down and automatic reversing function, and a trip computer with current consumption indicator.

Beyond these features, the GLK comes with a rain sensor, central locking with infrared radio remote control, and cruise control as standard, plus privacy glass and heated, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors in the vehicle's body color with integrated indicators.

Option packages include the Premium package, the Full Leather Seating package, the Lighting package, the Appearance package, the AMG Styling package, the Multimedia package, the Lane Tracking package, and the Driver Assistance package.
