WASHINGTON – BMW of North America is recalling 29,800 2009-2012 model-year X5 xDrive 35d SAV diesel vehicles because their engine belt idler pulley bolt could loosen and break over time.

Such a break could cause the vehicle to suddenly lose power-assisted steering, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

BMW dealers will replace and tighten the idler pulley bolt to remedy the problem. This recall is expected to begin next month.

Vehicle owners can reach BMW at 1-800-525-7417.
