WASHINGTON – Toyota is recalling 11,153 2012-2013 model-year Scion IQ vehicles because the front passenger airbags may not deploy properly, the NHTSA reported.

The cable for the occupant classification system (OCS) may become damaged when the passenger seat is slid forward or backward. This OCS damage could then cause the front passenger airbags to fail to deploy or to deploy inappropriately for the passenger’s size and position, NHTSA said.

To remedy the problem, Toyota dealers will install a protective cover on the OCS weight sensor cable. The recall covers vehicles manufactured July 31, 2011 through Oct. 12, 2012.

This recall is expected to get under way in December. Scion IQ owners can reach Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
