MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – California’s Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill, S.B. 1298, that sets new safety standards and regulations for autonomous vehicle operation in California.

Google executives along with elected leaders joined Governor Brown at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View (the “Googleplex”) for the signing ceremony. Google has been testing autonomous vehicle technology for a while, and its fleet has logged hundreds of thousands of miles.

California Senator Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima) authored S.B. 1298, which allows autonomous vehicles to be operated on public roads for testing purposes as long as each vehicle has a fully licensed and bonded operator in the vehicle’s driver’s seat to take control if necessary.

The bill also instructs the California Department of Motor Vehicles to adopt regulations that govern the licensing, bonding, testing and operation of autonomous vehicle technology no later than January 1, 2015.
