WASHINGTON – Volvo Cars of North America is recalling 1,469 2011-2013 model-year Volvo S80 sedans because a software error may prevent the transmission from downshifting properly, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

For example, the vehicle may have difficulty shifting from fifth to fourth gear when coasting, the NHTSA said. This condition may result in decreased engine rpm and possible engine stall, posing a safety risk.

To remedy the problem, Volvo dealers will upgrade the software to the transmission control module. There will be no charge for this service.

Vehicle owners can reach Volvo at (800) 458-1552.
