WASHINGTON – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced two separate Kia recalls – one involving 2009 model-year Kia Borregos and another involving 2006-2008 model-year Kia Rios.
One recall covers nearly 22,000 2009 model-year Borrego vehicles that are equipped with non-adjustable brake pedals. Certain pedal mounts may have a fiberglass composition that allows them to break off in a collision where the impact hasn’t immobilized the vehicle. This could allow the vehicle to roll, requiring the use of the parking brake to prevent possible secondary impact.
To remedy this problem, Kia dealers will replace the brake pedal mount free of charge. This recall is set to begin this month. The vehicles covered by this recall were all manufactured from May 2, 2008 through Jan. 20, 2009.
In a separate action, Kia is also recalling certain 2006-2008 model-year Rio vehicles because the front passenger seat occupant sensor mat is at risk of cracking over time. This cracking might eventually lead to occupant classification system (OCS) failure, in which the system fails to detect the presence of a child passenger in the seat and, consequently, fails to deploy the air bag during a collision.
The Rio vehicles covered by the recall were all manufactured from Feb. 20, 2005 through Dec. 9, 2007. Kia dealers will replace the OCS seat sensor mat free of charge. The recall is expected to get under way in July.
