WASHINGTON -- Volvo Cars of North America is recalling 2,742 2012 model-year Volvo S60 and XC60 passenger vehicles because of a fuel leakage risk.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an incorrect mixture and over-application of underbody coating on the vehicles might have resulted in rigid, icicle-like areas hanging from the vehicle’s undercarriage. This problem may lead to the underbody coating penetrating the fuel lines and causing fuel leakage, posing a fire risk.

To remedy the problem, Volvo dealers will inspect the vehicle undercarriage to see whether excessive underbody coating is present in the fuel line area. If too much of the coating is there, it will be removed. If there is damage to the fuel lines, they will be replaced.

This safety recall is expected to get under way around April 13. Volvo can be reached at (800) 458-1552.
