WASHINGTON – Nissan North America next month will issue two separate recalls – one involving more than 33,800 2010-2011 model-year Sentra vehicles, and another involving more than 28,290 2011 model-year Jukes.

The Sentra recall covers vehicles that were manufactured during two time periods in 2010 -- May 11-22 and July 8-Oct. 25 – and that were equipped with MR20 engines. The zinc coating applied to the terminal stud bolt was thicker than the specification required. This might result in a voltage drop that could cause difficulty starting the vehicle and could damage the engine control module, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. As a result, the engine might stall or fail to restart, posing a safety risk.

Nissan will notify owners of the recall, and dealers will replace the positive battery terminal and cover free of charge. This recall is expected to get under way around Jan. 23, 2012.

The Juke recall covers 2011 model-year Jukes that were manufactured from April 9, 2010 through May 12, 2011. The turbocharger boost sensor bracket may separate from the air inlet tube because of a defective weld. If the bracket comes off, the vehicle could suddenly stall while the engine is idling, posing a safety risk.

Nissan dealers will remedy the problem by checking the lot number on the air inlet tube and replacing it if necessary, free of charge. This safety recall is expected to get under Jan. 9, 2012.

Vehicle owners can reach Nissan at (800) 647-7261.
