ORLANDO, FL – Telit Wireless Solutions, Inc., the U.S.-based mobile technology arm of Telit Communications), announced that its GE865-QUAD cellular module was selected by REDTAIL Telematics for its VAM (Vehicle Asset Management) GPS product, a tracking device designed as part of a comprehensive wireless fleet management solution.

“Telit’s compact cellular modules delivered the reliable performance and rugged durability required by fleet management solutions. Plus, their extensive experience supporting vehicle monitoring applications throughout design, certification and implementation proved invaluable in guiding our VAM solution to market,” said Anna Amoresano, Vice President of Sales and Marketing of REDTAIL Telematics.

Equipped with REDTAIL Telematics Protocol (RTP), VAM offers fleet managers a complete set of vehicle data, tracking events such as excessive acceleration, speeding, harsh braking, excessive idling and GSM or GPS tampering and jamming detection. The Telit GE865-QUAD module allows for the real-time transmission of these detailed records over cellular networks, readily accessible for fleet managers utilizing the customizable REDTAIL Telematics Fleet Management Solution software.

This immediate access to fleet location, vehicle status and driver behaviors leads to increased efficiency, improvements in customer service and cost-reduction for fleet managers.

“REDTAIL’s VAM and complete asset management system helps fleet managers capitalize on the real-time monitoring capabilities that are at the core of M2M’s value proposition,” said Michael Ueland, Vice President and General Manager of Telit Wireless Solutions—North America. “They are able to leverage cellular communications to both drive down maintenance costs and also observe, and ultimately change, driver behavior to avoid accidental damage.”

VAM was designed under an exclusive partnership with Plextek Limited, the first of many products to be introduced into the REDTAIL portfolio. The hardware offers the flexibility of an internal GSM/GPS antenna with the option to use an external GPS antenna as well as five inputs and outputs.

VAM can detect harsh breaking and rapid acceleration and features an optional IP67 offering for harsh fleet environments. OBDII integration capability and a comprehensive software development kit (SDK) allow users to leverage VAM capabilities for their unique business needs.

REDTAIL VAM offers a unique value proposition when combined with Telit’s Premium FOTA Management, which allows the GE865-QUAD to receive over-the-air remote software updates. VAM was designed to initiate over-the-air updates using only 100kb of memory, significantly reducing airtime costs. If an over-the-air update is required over thousands of devices, adding a new feature will be extremely affordable.

The Telit GE865-QUAD module also features optimized power consumption, a Ball Grid Array (BGA) design, and an integrated TCP/IP protocol stack, that provides support for UDP, FTP, and SMTP via AT commands. Since Telit owns and controls the firmware within its modules, any changes to underlying chipsets will have minimal impact on customers’ application designs.
