WASHINGTON - General Motors Corp. is recalling more than 192,000 MY 2004-2011 Chevrolet Colorado, MY 2004-2011 GMC Canyon, MY 2006 Isuzu i-280/i-350 and MY 2007-2008 Isuzu i-290/i370 pickup trucks. The recall covers regular cab and extended cab trucks that have no rear seat but are equipped with a front 60/40 split bench seat.

The recalled trucks fail to comply with federal safety standards for child restraint anchorage systems, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The top tether anchor for the front center seat is not accessible and the owner's manual does not include instructions on how to use the top tether.

Both NHTSA and GM discourage placement of a child in a front seat. Nonetheless, there may be circumstances that require placement of a child in a restraint in the front center seating position, since these vehicles have no rear seat. A lack of access to the top tether anchor, as well as a lack of instructions on how to use it, might lead to improper installation of a child restraint, NHTSA said.

To remedy the problem, dealers will cut a hole into the back panel trim cover to allow access to the top tether anchor for the front center seat position and will provide instructional information to supplement the owner's manual.

The Isuzu models involved in the recall were built by GM.

Owners can Chevrolet at (800) 630-2438 or GMC at (866) 996-9463.
