LONDON, UK - General Electric CEO Jeffrey Immelt on Oct. 30 revealed the company plans to order "tens of thousands" of electric vehicles in about a week. During the CEO's speech in London, he called the impending EV order the "largest order in history," reported the International Business Times.

The initiative calls for about half of GE's 45,000-person sales force to drive electric vehicles. Immelt, however, didn't reveal which automakers would be involved.

GE is emerging as a major player in the EV market. Back in September, GE and Better Place announced a partnership to accelerate the EV infrastructure. This collaboration takes advantage of GE's smart-grid expertise and WattStation EV charger, along with Better Place's EV services and infrastructure solutions.

GE's WattStation is an EV charger designed to help accelerate the adoption of plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) by significantly decreasing time needed for vehicle charging. Its smart grid-enabled technology could also help utility companies manage the impact of EVs on the local and regional grids.

Over the next five years, GE plans to invest $10 billion in clean energy across its business lines.
