WASHINGTON - Volvo Cars of North America LLC is recalling 9,746 MY 2010-2011 S80, MY 2010 V70, MY 2011 XC60 and MY 2010-2011 XC70 vehicles because of a potential airbag problem.

There may be an intermittent fault in the driver's airbag clockspring wiring connector for the supplemental restraint system, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said. As a result, the driver's frontal airbag may not deploy correctly in the event of a crash.

To remedy the problem, dealers will install a metal shim in the driver's airbag clockspring wiring connector. This service will be performed free of charge.

This recall, designated as "safety recall No. R229" for reference purposes, is expected to begin about Oct. 29.

Vehicle owners can contact Volvo at (800) 458-1552.
