SACRAMENTO, CA - California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has vetoed a California bill (SB 427) that supporters argued would help prevent airbag fraud.

The bill would have imposed a fine of $5,000 or up to one year in prison, or both, on any automotive repair dealer that "prepares a written estimate for repairs that includes replacement of a deployed airbag and who fails to repair and fully restore the airbag to original operating condition."

The legislation also sought to change state law so that collision repair shops cannot use aftermarket exterior lighting in their repair work without fully disclosing in the estimate that the part is non-OEM.
