WASHINGTON - Hyundai Motor Co. is recalling 139,500 MY 2011 Sonatas because some of the vehicles may have a steering defect.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the steering column intermediate shaft universal joint connections on some of these vehicles may have been either improperly assembled or insufficiently tightened. This problem could result in a complete separation or compromised attachment of the connections, which in turn could lead to a loss or reduction of steering control.

The vehicles in question were manufactured from Dec. 11, 2009 through Sept. 10, 2010.

Hyundai dealers will inspect the steering column intermediate shaft universal joint connections to make sure the assembly and torque are proper. In addition, dealers will update the power steering software free of charge.

The safety recall is set to begin in October. For reference, the recall is campaign No. 097.

Hyundai can be reached at (800) 633-5151.
