WASHINGTON - Garmin International Inc. is recalling 1.25 million Nuvi portable automotive GPS navigation units because the potential for overheating batteries poses a fire risk.

Some of the recalled units were sold as aftermarket equipment, but some were installed as original equipment in certain passenger vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Garmin will notify owners of record, and technicians will repair the GPS units by replacing the battery and inserting a spacer on top of the battery free of charge.

Garmin can be reached at (866) 957-1981.
