WASHINGTON - Nissan North America is recalling 46,000 MY 2009-2010 Nissan Cube vehicles because they fail to comply with federal safety standards in place to guard against fuel system leaks.

The recall covers Cube vehicles manufactured from Jan. 30, 2009 through July 30, 2010, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. When the vehicle was rotated following a required rear-moving barrier crash test, the amount of fuel leakage exceeded the allowable limits.

Such fuel leakage poses a fire risk.

To remedy the problem, dealers will develop a special protector and attach it to the gasoline recirculation tube at the location of the filler neck connector. This service will be performed free of charge.

The recall is expected to begin toward the end of August. Vehicle owners can reach Nissan at (800) 647-7261.
