WASHINGTON - The National Academy of Sciences has directed a 13-member panel of engineers, scientists and auto safety experts to study and identify potential electronic causes of unintended acceleration in today's vehicles, the Associated Press reported.

The request was made in the aftermath of Toyota's major recalls, but the study will examine electronic systems across the auto industry. The NAS advises the government on scientific matters.

The study will begin in July and is expected to span 15 months. Dr. Louis Lanzerotti of the New Jersey Institute of Technology will lead the panel.
