WASHINGTON, D.C. --- Nissan North America Inc. is recalling more than 26,000 MY 2009-2010 Altima and Maxima cars because the upper-front strut insulators may have been manufactured out of specification and could eventually crack.

If the strut insulator is cracked, the strut rod runs the risk of coming out of its mounting position. This could affect vehicle stability and increase the risk of a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Nissan will notify vehicle owners of the recall. Dealers will replace both left- and right-side front strut insulators free of charge. The safety recall is due to begin next month.
