PROVIDENCE RI --- The Rhode Island General Assembly is considering a bill that would require an independent appraisal of any vehicle collision damage that exceeds $2,000.

The bill, HB 5892A, also would make it an "unfair claims settlement practice" for an insurer to fail to perform a supplemental appraisal inspection of a vehicle within 48 hours after requested by the auto body shop.

The legislation has drawn support from the Auto Body Association of Rhode Island, and opposition from the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America.
