WASHINGTON A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) spokesman confirmed that the agency is developing test criteria to gauge passenger and light truck tire fuel efficiency, according to Modern Tire Dealer magazine.

NHTSA also is developing a plan to disseminate test results to the buying public.

Both actions were mandated by passage of the Energy Bill in 2007, which demanded the creation of a consumer education program about tire fuel efficiency.

NHTSA is in the process of developing rolling resistance ratings and has conducted research to understand the differences between tires, said the spokesman, as reported by Modern Tire Dealer.

The agency is working on creating a rating system to help buyers easily understand the relationship between tires and fuel efficiency possibly by the end of 2009.
