NEW YORK --- To offset their rising fuel costs, members of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance plan to meet today, July 7, to propose a $1 fuel surcharge that will need an OK from the Taxi and Limousine Commission, Newsday reported.

The taxi alliance said New York's 43,000 yellow-cab drivers each use about 20 gallons of gas per shift.

The alliance proposed a similar fuel surcharge after Hurricane Katrina crippled refining capacity and sent gas prices soaring, but the TLC denied approval.
